Rooted in Montalcino since the 19th century, right at the beginning of Brunello

• Tenuta Il Poggione began at the end of the 19th century. Lavinio Franceschi, a landowner from Scandicci, on the hills that rise above Florence decided to buy land near Montalcino. Franceschi’s greatest achievement was to identify the area as having high potential to make great wines, especially those made from the Sangiovese grape. His management style brought the area into more modern times, especially with the investment into a new winery facility with the latest winery technology available. New Sangiovese clones were also selected to help improve quality with new vineyards planted in suitable terroirs. After more than a century, Lavinio Franceschi’s work is

still a point of reference for his successors at Il Poggione.

• Today, Tenuta Il Poggione is one of Montalcino’s biggest wineries, it includes 600 hectares, of which 125 hectares are planted with vines, 70 with olive groves and the rest are arable land and woods. Tenuta Il Poggione has always practiced diversified farming, by planting different crops other than the vineyards.
• At the Il Poggione estate, the grapes are harvested entirely by hand and the winemaking takes place with traditional methods utilizing state of the art equipment. The new winery, built in 2004, allows for complete control of the vinification process, additional the introduction the “submerged cap”technique has improved the concentration of the wines. For the aging of its red wines, Tenuta Il Poggione uses large French oak casks, which are kept 5m underground.

• Driven by tradition, terroir focused, built for the cellar, and consistent across the range in a way that speaks to an estate that hasn't chased trends or critics. The antithesis of a modern, polished Brunello.
